In 1970, members of United Rubber Workers Local 831 combined their savings and began URW 831 Members Federal Credit Union. It was ran out of a brief case. Forty years later, URW Community Federal Credit Union has over $100 million dollars in its full-service financial institution. It is one of the largest independent, not-for-profit financial institutions in Danville.
The history of this credit union is a success story of individual hard work and sharing to help many. URW Local 831 members A. Ray Deel, Charles R. Denny, Jack D. Dodson, Jimmie E. Foster, Peter A. George, R. Jack Jones, Al T. Lewis, and John B. Thompson signed the certificate to organize an employee's credit union. These founders could not have imagined a credit union with 5 locations and over $100 million dollars and nearly 15,000 members. But the credit union was established on the principle of "taking care of our own," and that service has earned the support of members through the decades. In 1986 URW 831 Members Federal merged with Telco Federal credit union and in 2003 URW opened its doors to the community and became URW Community Federal Credit Union. In 2008, URW grew again by merging with Danville Regional Medical Center Federal Credit Union. URW Community Federal is celebrating over 40 years of service to our members. Chairman Archie Glass leads the all-volunteer Board of Directors. Cheryl Doss, President/CEO, leads the staff.
